With minimal frontal overhang and muscular flanks that seem shaped by this car's dynamic forward thrust, the 5 Series never quite looks at rest. But driving excitement has always been BMW's stock in trade. And the 5 Series, whether in its spirited turbocharged four-cylinder 528i form, its smooth-as-glass inline-6 535i form, or its forceful, V8-powered top-of-the-line 550i, fully earns its reputation in motion. Even the ActiveHybrid 5 is powerful, accelerating from zero to 60 in 5.7 seconds. And the M5's performance is purely awesome.įor those susceptible to real driving enthusiasm, the 5 Series models seem to exhort you to drive them vigorously, confidently, with pleasure. Their over-the-road qualities, or at least the promise of them, are surely what motivate many BMW aspirants. That these roomy sedans also provide safe, sumptuous family transportation qualify them as a highly desirable mid-size entries. The modular BMW interior is handsome and contemporary. Glowing tan and matte-black contrast handsomely on the dashboard, these surfaces punctuated by elegant swatches of exotic wood. Instrumentation is comprehensive and flawless. Gauges are about perfect to look at and read. Those who see themselves as having reached a certain level of luxury should be satisfied in this stylish cabin. Those whose standards of ergonomics and efficiency are high, might find compromised areas. The 5 Series offers a comprehensive inventory of passive safety provisions, with multiple airbags and structural provisions that protect occupants in the event an impact occurs. The 5 Series models are substantial, well-engineered passenger cars, yet they are gifted with an exciting athleticism that keeps the driving experience engaging and pleasurable.īMW's fourth-generation iDrive cockpit-management system is much easier to use than previous versions, but it is still not always intuitive or straightforward. With patience and a little insight, though, iDrive can get you what you want. The 2013 models get further streamlining and simplification to the navigation and infotainment programs. Other than that, 2013 changes to the 5 Series are all to the option packages. The luxury midsize 5 Series was redesigned for 2011, and the 528i got its powerful and efficient 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine for 2012. BMW's 2.0-liter turbocharged engine rivals Audi's 2.0-liter turbo.Īll three BMW 5 Series sedans are chic, crisp and distinguished for their aggressive styling and driving character. For the most demanding sporting driver, they are big and heavy, but their excellent dynamics and agility make them assertively proactive and manageable when faced with the necessity of an emergency avoidance maneuver, making them excellent family sedans. The 2013 BMW 550i gets a big bump in power. The V8 in the 550i is up from 45 horsepower to 445 hp for 2013, with torque increasing by 30 foot-pounds to 480 pound-feet. The 2013 BMW M5 features a 560-horsepower V8. The 2013 M5 is available with a 6-speed manual transmission or 7-speed double-clutch paddle-shifting transmission. The new M5 is ready for the track, but we found that for anything more than a handful of laps it needs ceramic brake rotors, which are expected to be an option for the 2014 model. The 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 combines the turbocharged 6-cylinder with a 54-horsepower electric motor to make an impressive combined 335 horsepower and deliver an unimpressive 23/30 City/Highway miles per gallon EPA rating. The electric motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery in the trunk. Gran Turismo models ride on a wheelbase extended by four inches, with 2+2 seating behind a long hood and under a coupe roofline. The Gran Turismo come in two versions: 535i GT with the turbo I6 and 550i GT with the V8. Each is available with xDrive all-wheel drive. The 5 Series cars come standard with rear-wheel drive, but each is also available as an all-wheel-drive xDrive model. The BMW 528i sedan is the entry-level model, with a potent 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Then there is the BMW 535i sedan, with the sweet 300-hp turbocharged inline-6 and the 550i sedan, with a whumping 445-hp V8. The four-door sedan bodies are the same, and they all come with a smooth 8-speed manual automatic transmission. Recently redesigned, the BMW 5 Series gets two new models for 2013: the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 and the high-performance BMW M5. The 2013 BMW 5 Series now includes a dozen models, counting the variants with all-wheel drive.

As those stars rotate (and neutron stars can rotate extremely quickly), those raised lumps could theoretically create ripples in the surrounding space-time - also known as gravitational waves. According to a 2007 NASA blog post, a sugar cube's worth of matter would weigh more than 1 billion tons inside a neutron star - roughly the weight of Mount Everest.Īccording to the new research, nuclear pasta may become so strong and so densely packed that it could even layer up to form small "mountains" that could lift the crust of some neutron stars. To exist under such extreme conditions, everything in a neutron star becomes much, much heavier than it would be anywhere else in the universe. To visualize how insanely dense that is, imagine cramming the mass of 1.3 million Earths into a single American city. As a result, neutron stars pack an entire sun's worth of mass (or more) into a compact core about 12 miles (20 kilometers) across. Nuclear pasta is thought to exist only inside neutron stars, which form when massive stars (at least eight times the mass of Earth's sun) collapse under their own gravity. Much of nuclear pasta's strength likely comes from its density. " may make nuclear pasta the strongest material in the known universe," the researchers wrote in their new paper. The team determined that, to shatter a plate of nuclear pasta, it could take about 10 billion times the force needed to shatter steel. In a new study soon to be published in the journal Physical Review Letters (and prepublished in the online journal ), a team of researchers from the United States and Canada ran a series of computer simulations to test the strength of nuclear pasta, based on all that is known about the neutron- star conditions under which it forms. Unlike earthly noodles, however, nuclear pasta may be the strongest substance in the universe. Just like your nonna's pasta, nuclear pasta makes great leftovers (it may be pretty much the only matter that can survive in a star after a supernova). Biomarkers in traumatic brain injury: a review. There is a significant health risk associated with repetitive injury if the diagnosis is missed, and so there is great value in an objective biomarker to assist diagnostic and prognostic decisions. Currently, there is no validated objective biomarker available to assess the presence or severity of concussion in sport, and so it is necessary to rely on subjective measures like self-reporting of symptoms which depend on the cooperation of the athlete. The diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury or sports-related concussion is a challenge for all clinicians, players, coaches and parents involved in contact sports. Crusader Kings 3 has no objectives besides the ones you choose yourself, no script, and potentially no time limit, so the interesting situations that occur in it do so entirely through the interaction of its many overlapping systems. Crusader Kings 3 is not the best comparison here, since it offers a vastly different and more complex strategy experience than most RTS games nonetheless, it is instructive for its reliance on purely emergent gameplay. It’s not just about the kremlin mania, but about making your own fun more generally. You might think at this point it’s time to break the cycle by diving back into the campaigns, but Skirmish mode has soured them for me. Being presented with the option to do anything I want leads me inescapably back to building kremlins. The problem in my case is that, to borrow a phrase from Theodor Adorno that I suspect was never intended to apply to video games (let alone one about imperialism), freedom to choose is freedom to choose the same. It would have been nice to see more civilizations and victory conditions included, but it’s a solid foundation. Teams can be predetermined, victory conditions toggled, the abundance of resources adjusted, and the difficulty of each AI player dialed up or down. They offer immediate access to Age of Empires IV’s full range of civilizations: the English, Chinese, French, Romans, Mongols, Russians, the Delhi Sultanate, and the Abbasid Dynasty. They can be small enough to feel cramped with just two players or large enough to hold eight. They include archipelagos, forests, rivers, hills and mountains, or vast plains. There are currently 17 basic map types that are used to randomly generate a token map for a given match. The Skirmish options in Age of Empires IV are comprehensive. A mainstay of RTS games, it’s effectively a sandbox that removes time and objective pressures and gives the player access to a civilization’s entire technology tree immediately (provided the prerequisite buildings are constructed over the course of a match). Why wait to build and expand a single kremlin over the course of many missions and hours, or indeed limit yourself in any way at all, when there is a mode available from the outset that lets you do whatever you want? But ultimately I’m just not that interested. The missions are bookended with lavish videos giving history lessons that tie together the overall story arc. The second mission of the Norman campaign, for example, is focused on capturing and maintaining multiple bases, while the second mission of the Moscow campaign prioritizes collecting taxes from neighboring settlements. The campaigns try their best to vary the core gameplay loop by giving different abilities and bonuses to different civilizations and by emphasizing different elements of base-building, scouting, and troop battles across different missions. Age of Empires IV hits like a truck of nostalgia, even as it presents a gameplay loop that most RTS games moved on from by the early ‘00s.Īge of Empires IV offers several campaigns, from the tried and tested 1066 English setting to the rise of Moscow from 1238 through to imperial Russia. Sure, you can attempt fancy military tactics with split forces, siege engines, and support units, but anyone who grew up on the likes of Dune II, Command & Conquer, or Total Annihilation will remember the certainty of overwhelming unit numbers. Raise villagers and send them out to gather wood, food, gold, and stone to build an increasingly sophisticated base, then use the base to build increasingly sophisticated combat units, and finally accumulate enough of these to rush the enemy force. You could call it an unhealthy obsession, I suppose, but is it my fault that Age of Empires IV offers some of the most addictive base-building since, well, Age of Empires II?Īge of Empires IV is deliberately and unashamedly old-school, not merely recalling the revered second installment in the franchise, but in many ways directly replicating it in a modern engine. So far I’ve built six kremlins, and I can’t promise that I won’t build more. Soon, he learned they’re all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow “runners” for a shot at escape. The story begins with Thomas, who is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased. It has also been adapted into a film trilogy. Written by american writer James Dashner, The Maze Runner is a young-adult dystopian science-fiction series, comprised of a main trilogy, two prequels and a companion book, published between 20. “My main point is to entertain and write a fun, cool story,” Dashner said.Įmily Ellsworth is a blogger at Emily's Reading Room online at, a blog dedicated to promoting a love of young adult fiction.Last Updated 6 months ago. With Hunger Games, The Maze Runner was the other successful teen dystopia blockbuster series. I think that my readers will think, ‘Yeah, well if the world had truly gotten that desperate maybe I would have done something like what Wicked did.’ ”īut sending a message isn’t why Dashner loves to write. “The best kind of villain is the one that you have empathy for. “The main theme that I want people to think about when they’ve read the series is that nothing in the world is black and white,” said Dashner. I picture them as movies.”Įven though his books are fast-paced, Dashner said that there are some themes and ideas that will cause a discussion among readers. I love suspense and action movies,” said Dashner. And they will fight harder to make sure that doesn’t happen.”ĭashner’s brand of dystopian fiction is action-packed, full of plot twists and excitement. “It can stamp in their minds how bad a society could get. “It could serve as a warning to all these young readers who could grow up to be our leaders someday,” said Dashner. But he says there are still things to be learned from the dystopian genre. It’s kind of creepy to think these stories all these people are reading technically could happen.”ĭashner believes that the popularity of the dystopian genre has less to do with readers' views on the current political climate and is a statement that readers really enjoy a cool, compelling story. “I think with this dystopian genre, it really appeals to all those people who fell in love with fantasy again, but added this element of realism. But fantasy is very obviously make believe, not real, can’t happen,” said Dashner. “Harry Potter brought in this amazing wave of this love for fantasy. Dashner believe that the success of his series has a lot to do with the popularity of the dystopian genre thanks to "The Hunger Games." "The Maze Runner" and "The Scorch Trials" have been sold in 21 countries and have been translated into 19 languages. Readers from all around the world are hooked on the James Dashner brand. “I think they’re going to love my next series just as much or more.” “I think my next book will be strong enough that when they read it, they’re really going to be hooked on the James Dashner brand,” Dashner said. Dashner also assures readers that if they enjoyed "The Maze Runner," they should be excited for the new series. Dashner says they may not be classified as dystopian, but they are set in the future. I’ve written two entirely new books since I wrote 'The Death Cure.’ ”ĭetails about the new books have not yet been officially announced. “But I’m ready to move on I have moved on. “I’ve grown to know this world and these characters so much, I am sad for it to be done,” said Dashner. To see the answers to everything and the unique ending.”ĭashner said the ending of the characters and the world he’s built is bittersweet. “I’m really anxious and eager for people to see how it ends. “I’m pretty confident that they are going to like it,” said Dashner. I’d be devastated if I disappointed them.”īut even with big expectations and eager fans waiting for the conclusion to the series, Dashner believes he’s got an ending that will be thrilling enough to satiate their appetites. I’m not saying that my series is as big as those, but to my readers it is. “That’s not my opinion, but that’s what I’ve heard. “I know the last two big profile series ("Twilight" and "The Hunger Games") that ended there were a lot of fans disappointed,” said Dashner. But that doesn’t mean that he’s not a little anxious about the reception of "The Death Cure" among his fans. Luckily, writing about heat is something that Dashner has proved himself capable of handling. Compound that with the pressure of finishing a series that has been on the New York Times best-seller list for 26 weeks, and there is more than a little heat that James Dashner might be feeling with the upcoming release of "The Death Cure," the final book in "The Maze Runner" triology. Writing the ending to a series is a prospect that leaves many writers biting their nails. I’ve been doing the program for about two months now and I really like it. Three weeks is really no time at all and I would feel like I was just getting started in that amount of time. I had no expectations for weight loss or mastery of yoga from this program. But I was more interested in the increased flexibility and strength that could be gained from doing yoga. I wasn’t really interested in the program for the weight loss aspect. I did pay close attention to the teeny tiny print on the screen during each of the testimonials and saw that everyone had done multiple rounds of the 3 Week Yoga Retreat and followed a calorie restricted diet, and most had become Beach Body coaches. The 3 Week Yoga Retreat does tout weight loss. So I am not falling for Beach Body promises again. We were definitely stronger and I really enjoyed the variety of the workouts but that was a HUGE time commitment and we expected more. The commercials promised that we would look ripped and we did not. We still argue with my husband about this because he said we quit just when we were starting to look good. We did NOT look like those ripped people in the commercials. □ We even extended it and did our own P120X, adding an extra thirty days. We were so sick of turkey bacon by the end of it. We did every workout, we never missed a day, and we followed the eating program. Back in the day when P90X was all the rage, my daughter and I committed to that program and followed it TO THE LETTER. I’m a sucker for infomercials, but not for Beach Body. This program is offered by Beach Body and the infomercials feature Leeza Gibbons and several participants with success stories. Still not quite was I was looking for.Ī few months ago I started seeing those late night infomercials for the 3 Week Yoga Retreat Program. I felt a little detached from the whole thing, though, because all of the instruction was done as a voice over, with the instructor doing each pose without talking directly to the camera. The classes were very soothing and I liked them. One day she might be by the beach, the next in the woods, or in a garden of sunflowers. One thing I really liked about this series is that all of the segments are filmed outside in nature. Then I tried Happy Yoga with Sarah Starr. I’m not sure she means to be, but I think this gal is really entertaining. Also, for some reason she just really amused me more than anything. Wai Lana sings and dances for quite a while at the end of every episode. But time wise, the program was fairly light on yoga and really heavy on some singing and dancing at the end. She is very flexible and I found some of the poses too advanced for me. I liked that each program addressed a different aspect of fitness, like strength, or stamina, or flexibility. The scenery in this series is beautiful, and Wai Lana wears really colorful outfits and flowers in each segment. The first one I tried was the Wai Lana Yoga Series. Most of them come on super early in the morning so there was no chance I would see them live, □ so I set up a recording schedule for several different programs. I did a search on the TV guide and saw there were lots of yoga programs I could record and do from home. I started doing that and enjoyed it but I felt that between the drive, the class, and then coffee I was giving up too much of my day to this. Several of the students began asking me to join them for coffee after class. They also weren’t as friendly as the gentle class students. I held my own but I felt out of place with the bendy girls. I wasn’t sure, but I attended that session the following week. After a few sessions, the instructor told me I could definitely handle the more strenuous class. I really liked the class and didn’t feel intimidated by the instructor or the other students. □ I felt like I should start with the less strenuous class since I didn’t have much yoga experience. They have two types of classes–a more gentle class that is less strenuous, and a class for all the hardcore bendy chicks. I am a member of a club that also offers weekly yoga classes so I started going. I had done a little yoga in the past, so I decided to look into starting up again. When my daughter left for college I was determined to stay busy and keep moving. You can read my disclosure page for more information. These environments are stylized to fit the futuristic and cartoon-like art styles of the Sonic and Mario franchises respectively. Mario & Sonic brings together the two title characters and fourteen more from both franchises to participate in environments based on the official venues of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. For example, instead of drumming the controller, players have to quickly stroke the touchscreen. The DS game is the same in design, but due to lack of motion controls, its events are much less physically demanding than those on the Wii. For example, in table tennis the player movement is controlled by the Wii, while the swinging of the racket is controlled by the player. Some aspects of the gameplay are computer controlled. There are also events that are more physically demanding, such as the five running events which require rapid drumming of the controller. While the Nunchuk is required for archery, it is optional for most of the events. The player moves the remote in a manner similar to the method the separate games are played in real life for example, swinging the Wii Remote to replicate hammer throw or pulling back the remote and tilting the Nunchuk like a bow and arrow. On the Wii, the events consist of using the motion sensor capabilities of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk attachment to control the actions of the on-screen character. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is a collection of twenty-four events based on the Olympic Games. The player twists the Wii Remote and presses various buttons, as instructed, to perform tricks in the trampolining event. Mario & Sonic sold over 10 million units and started a series of related sport video games to coincide with upcoming Olympic events. The Wii game was awarded the "Best Wii game of 2007" at the Games Convention in Leipzig. Sega adopted the IOC's mission of promoting sportsmanship and interest young people in the Olympics by using its characters following this theme, Nintendo allowed Sega to include Mario with Sonic the Hedgehog, created by Sega as a mascot to rival Mario in the early 1990s.Ĭritics praised the multiplayer interaction of the Wii game, and variety of events of both versions, but criticized the Wii version for its complexity and its DS counterpart for not offering the same interaction between players. Both games follow rules and regulations of the specific sports. The DS version uses the stylus and button controls. Players assume the role of a Nintendo or Sega character, using the Wii Remote to mimic sports actions such as swinging a paddle. Mario & Sonic on the Wii and DS is a collection of twenty-four events based on the Olympic Games. The first official video game of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, it is licensed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through exclusive licensee International Sports Multimedia (ISM), and is the first official crossover game to feature characters from both the Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog series. It was published by Nintendo in Japan and by Sega in other regions, and released on the Wii in November 2007 and the Nintendo DS handheld in January 2008. It is the first installment on the Mario & Sonic series. Where the game's true interest lies is in its surreal Dream Events and its newest mode, London Party.Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is a crossover sports and party game developed by the Sega Sports R&D Department. Granted, it never gets old seeing characters like Bowser or Wario performing a “rhythmic ribbon” gymnastics routine or taking part in synchronized swimming, but in the end even those instances of out-and-out silliness just aren't enough. While the game's ease-of-use is a definite plus, it does nothing to alter the fact that the straight-up sporting events are something of a yawn. To be fair, in addition to the events being retreads, the controls are still pretty good - responsive and easy to use - and you can choose to play with either a horizontal Wii remote or Wii remote and Nunchuk combination (although since some games require you to disconnect the Nunchuk, the latter's more trouble than it's worth). On top of this, aside from the addition of a few new sporting events (including soccer and equestrian jumping), the Olympic portion of the game plays much the same as did the in first M&S summer Olympics. While four years ago it might have been exciting to see the two go head-to-head, today the matchup is nothing special. The two friendly rivals have met twice previously in other Olympic Games. As a reminder, this isn't Mario and Sonic's first trip to the rodeo. Sandero Kwid EV Help: How to fix problems with Renault Zoe R-Link. They took Counter-Strike and combined it with. How do you do that? Package a modem and a dial-up account in every box? Include a video or DVD? Send Pat Hook door to door to AWP every customer on a LAN? Well I think Gearbox came up with one of the smartest and eloquent solutions possible. CZ is slated for release 2nd quarter of this year. What I discovered was not some goofy find the key plot thrown in to the Counter-Strike game, but a clever approach that should pleasantly surprise Counter-Strike fans. A little while ago I took a trip to Gearbox Software to find out just what in the world Condition Zero was. Condition Zero was finally completed by Turtle Rock Studios and Valve Software.I decided to go ahead and post this bright and early for the heck of it. Ritual Software's attempt was eventually scrapped, however, their work was modified and released as "Deleted Scenes". Gearbox's version was widely publicized, however after many delays, Valve eventually passed the job onto Ritual Software. Following Rogue's attempt, Gearbox was tasked with the job of creating Condition Zero. The bots feature excellent AI and have numerous configuration options to provide a better playing experience.Ĭondition Zero was originally developed by Rogue Software who were forced to scrap the project after internal problems resulting in Rogue's closure. Official Condition Zero versions of the official Counter-Strike maps use the prefixes de (Bomb defusal) and cs (Hostage rescue) and the suffix cz.Ĭondition Zero's primary claim to fame is the included bots, which can be used to simulate multiplayer matches or to increase the number of players in a real multiplayer match. The game was released in 2004 using the GoldSrc Half-Life engi. Here are the differences that Ive observed (some may be already mentioned): Weapons: CS:S has approximately 25 less recoil compare to CS:CZ, but is more sensitive to movement, especially the AWP (Arctic Warfare Police) sniper rifle. Counter-Strike Condition Zero is a multiplayer video game and the follow-up to Counter-Strike. Counter-Strike: Condition Zero is an offering of single and multiplayer content with its Tour of Duty campaign, a large number of skirmish modes, updates, and new content for Counter-Strike's award-winning multiplayer gameplay, plus over 12 bonus single-player missions. I no longer have CS 1.6 but I still got Condition Zero, which is, in my opinion, plays identical to 1.6, except for the overpowered spread weapons (HE, Shotguns, Machine Gun). Despite everything that the game is lacking, it remains a steady improvement and a must-play for any fan of the original title. |
